US aims for World League success with young team

The 22-man roster for the 2013 FIVB World League looks much different

Wichita, Kansas, June 6, 2013 - The United States will kick off its 2013 FIVB World League run on Friday and Saturday with a match against Argentina in Wichita, Kansas.

The US team, which is ranked No. 5 in the world by the FIVB, will try to repeat its success from the 2012 FIVB World League, in which they placed second.

This year's team is younger than the previous year, with only two veterans from the 2008 US Team that won World League and the Olympic gold medal: Rich Lambourne and David Lee.

New head coach John Speraw is using the World League to assess new talent, even if it means some growing pains.

"I think it’s about turnover and who the young guys are and how much experience we can get them early,” Speraw says. “I think we’re going to have to get some new blood in here and take a look at some new young players and see what they can do, particularly early in the (quadrennial). I think the coach needs empowered to take some risks even if it means there are some early failures, because I think it’s going to mean success in the long run.”

Working with younger players brings new enthusiasm to practice, Speraw says, and has made it easier for him to implement change in the gym.

“We have been working on establishing the system we want to run over the next four years,” Speraw says of his first days in the gym with the team. “We want to establish the culture that we want to compete with the best in the world.”

The roster for Wichita includes returnees Lee, Matt Anderson, Paul Lotman, David Smith and Brian Thornton, who were considered the rookies in the 2012 London Olympics. The now experienced players will be advising the younger players, including Tony Ciarelli and Erik Shoji who are both 23.

“It will definitely be a new experience for me, being one of the older guys,” said Lotman, 28. “I’m looking forward to it."
