Netherlands, Portugal fight back in World League; Korea tops Japan

Gijs Jorna of the Netherlands receives the ball in Saturday's win against Canada

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 1, 2013 – The Netherlands and Portugal fought back from opening-day losses on Friday to record their first wins of the 2013 FIVB World League on Saturday, while Korea overcame archrivals Japan. All the matches were from Pool C.

The Netherlands cut down their errors from Friday’s 41 to 26 as they defeated Canada 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23) in Quebec City. "Holland outplayed us today in all aspects,” Canada coach Glenn Hoag admitted. “We couldn't produce any offense.”

Meanwhile, Portugal, who lost all 12 of their matches in last year’s World League, produced a stunning performance to edge Finland 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12). “We need this kind of intensity in our play and tough matches,” said Portugal coach Flavio Gulinelli. “I am very proud of what we did today.”

Korea pulled off a big home win over Japan and spoiled the debut of new Japan coach Gary Sato with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19) victory in Hwasung. “We spent four weeks in training camp and our passion and spirit today was amazing,” said Korea captain Lee Sun-Kyo.

Korea will take on Japan in the weekend’s remaining match on Sunday. All three pools will be in action next weekend.
