FIVB - Volleyball World League

Press release

Very important victory for us, says captain Joao José

Mikko Esko and Valdir Sequeira shook hands after the match.

Helsinki, Finland, June 1, 2013 - The turnaround from the previous night was unexpected, and Portugal, who lost all its 12 matches in last year’s World League, now opened its victory count with 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25,15-12). The Finns, regarded as favourites were of course in low spirits.
Antti Siltala, Finland captain: “We had big problems with Sequiera, we had big problems with Alex Ferreira on the serve, and today I think we were not ready on the mental side, we were behind a lot. That is the biggest reason for why we lost the game.”
Tuomas Sammelvuo, Finland coach: “Portugal showed a great reaction on what happened yesterday. About us, I completely agree with my captain. Our point was mental preparation for the work today. You could not expect us to always serve as well as yesterday. We knew that Portugal was going to play long rallies and good defence, and they were going to change their system of setting. We were not ready for this and it is also my responsibility.”
Joao José, Portugal captain: “We played well in the whole match, and I think we were spirited. In the end we did not have the pressure they put on us in all other sets, but we played hard and came away with a victory, very important for us.”
Flavio Gulinelli, Portugal coach: “We did the changes we asked for yesterday, not only in the mental part but also in the technical and tactical parts. We need this kind of intensity in our play, and tough matches altogether, and to find the confidence in each other among the players during the match. I am very proud of what we did today.”
