Rotterdam, the Netherlands, September 1, 2012 – Portugal nearly fought back from two sets down to clinch a remarkable win against the Netherlands in the first of two World League qualification second round matches at the Topsport Centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands however the determination of the home side couldn't be underestimated as the Netherlands won an increbile game 3-2 (26-24, 25-23, 24-26, 22-25, 20-18).

It was the first time the two teams had played over five sets and unfortunately for Portugal was the fifth time in a row they have lost a five-set match at FIVB level. The others were against Serbia, Finland, China and Argentina in the past two years in the World League including in the playoff series for the 2012 World League against China and in their last 2012 World League match, which was against Argentina.

Other quotes from the Netherlands v Portugal press conference on Saturday:

Netherlands coach Edwin Benne: "We have not encountered an opponent of this level this year. Portugal is an experienced team that has a lot of power. It was high level volleyball and I'm very satisfied with the result."

Netherlands player Bas van Bemmelen: "In the final set we as a team gave everything and I'm very happy with the 3-2 victory. The victory was not easy, Portugal had a strong block and good service pressure. We had to give everything today and of course tomorrow we will do the same."

Portugal coach Flavio Gulinelli:"Today was a tough match against the Netherlands. In the first two sets we were close, we had it in our own hands but gave it away. Tomorrow there will be another match and we have opportunities to win."
