Rotterdam, the Netherlands, September 1, 2012 – Portugal nearly fought back from two sets down to clinch a remarkable win against the Netherlands in the first of two World League qualification second round matches at the Topsport Centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands however the determination of the home side couldn't be underestimated as the Netherlands won an increbile game 3-2 (26-24, 25-23, 24-26, 22-25, 20-18).
It was the first time the two teams had played over five sets and unfortunately for Portugal was the fifth time in a row they have lost a five-set match at FIVB level. The others were against Serbia, Finland, China and Argentina in the past two years in the World League including in the playoff series for the 2012 World League against China and in their last 2012 World League match, which was against Argentina.
Portugal captain Joao Jose said: "It was difficult for us to win, the Dutch are well organized and played well. The first two sets we were in the lead but unfortunatly we couldn't finish the job."
