Team profile

Coach Edwin Benne started to rebuild his team in 2011 after the country’s fifth place finish in the European League. After a period of three years, the Dutch team is now back in the World League having qualified for this year’s edition following its win at the 2012 European League, with a selection of young players.

The team made its comeback in 2009 after a six year absence. Finishing 12th in the final ranking in 2009 proved to be a good learning for the young team who went onto win five of the 12 matches in the competition the following year.

The Netherlands has a rich history of men’s volleyball having won gold at the 1996 Olympic Games and the World League in addition to five silver medals and a bronze. They sit ninth of the overall honours ladder behind Russia, Brazil, Italy, Cuba, USA, Serbia, the Czech Republic and Poland.

In 2011 they participated in the European League for the first time in three year though they fell short of making the final four with a fifth place finish.

Coach profile

Edwin Benne made his first appearance playing for the Dutch national team in 1984.  His international career spanned nine years, ending in 1993. During this time he received 382 caps, and represented his country in two Olympic Games.
