Team profile

France, who finished seventh in last year’s World League, is entering a new era under coach Laurent Tillie, with a mix of experienced players (Pierre Pujol, Antonin Rouzier, Jean-Francois Exiga) and young talents (Eric N’Gapeth, Guillaume Quesque, Benjamin Toniutti).

After missing the 2012 Olympics, France replaced Philippe Blain with Tillie as they aim for Rio 2016. The first step was successful qualification for the 2013 European Championship. Tillie now hopes the World League, where France will face very strong opposition, will serve as a good testing ground for their European campaign. France finished second behind Brazil in the 2006 FIVB World League but have struggled to live up to the early promise of the past decade.

In 2008, France failed to qualify for the Olympic Games and Blain's team ended a disappointing 10th in the 2008 World League. In the 2009 World League, they narrowly missed making the Final Six after falling at the last hurdle to Argentina.

However, they turned things around and qualified for the World Championship in Poland, before winning silver at the European Championships. They suffered a set-back again in the 2010 World League when they were pipped to the Final Round and eventually finished 12th. At the World Championship in Italy later in the year they could only go one better, coming in 11th before again finishing 12th at the 2011 World League and seventh at the 2011 European Championship.

Coach profile

Tillie is one of the most famous players in French volleyball history. He was a key member, along with Alain Fabiani and Philippe Blain, of the national squad who won a silver medal at the European Championship in 1987 (and a bronze medal at the same competition two years before).

Captain of the French team from 1991to 1992, he played 406 games with the national squad. He was one of the first French players to play in the Italian league when he joined Falconara in 1986.

As a coach, Laurent guided AS Cannes to the French title in 2005 and the French Cup two years later. He was named France coach in July 2012 to replace former teammate Blain.

He is married to Caroline Keulen, a former player from the Netherlands. His older son, Kim, plays basketball in the French league, while Kevin, two years younger, is a member of the French national volleyball team.
