Coach profile

The most successful Finnish volleyball player begins his first season – and first coaching job – as head coach of Team Finland this year.

Tuomas Sammelvuo played 296 national team games and was playing in Russia for Lokomotiv Novosibirsk when appointed coach in January, replacing Daniel Castellani.

Sammelvuo's best achievement was with the men’s national team, ranking fourth at the European Championships in 2007. He was named ‘Player of the Year’ four times in Finland by fellow players and journalists, as well as Sport Idol of the Year in 2013.

During his career, Sammelvuo has played professionally in Finland, France, Italy, Japan, Russia and Poland. He speaks Finnish, English, Italian, French, Polish and Russian.
