The most successful Finnish volleyball
player begins his first season – and first coaching job – as head coach of Team
Finland this year.
Tuomas Sammelvuo played 296 national team games and was playing in Russia for
Lokomotiv Novosibirsk when appointed coach in January, replacing Daniel
Sammelvuo's best achievement was with the men’s national team, ranking fourth
at the European Championships in 2007. He was named ‘Player of the Year’ four
times in Finland by fellow players and journalists, as well as Sport Idol of
the Year in 2013.
During his career, Sammelvuo has played professionally in Finland, France,
Italy, Japan, Russia and Poland. He speaks Finnish, English, Italian, French,
Polish and Russian.
