Team profile

In 2009, after a six-year absence, The Netherlands played in the FIVB World League finishing twelfth in the final ranking. It was a good learning experience for the young team who went on to win five out of the 12 matches in the competition the following year.

The Netherlands has a rich history of men’s volleyball having won gold at the1996 Olympic Games and World League in addition to five silver medals and a bronze. They sit ninth on the overall honours ladder behind Russia, Brazil, Italy, Cuba, USA, Serbia, the Czech Republic and Poland.

In 2011 they participated in the European League for the first time in three years though they fell short of making the final four with a fifth place finish. Under their new coach Edwin Benne, the team started the 2012 year with a young roster and won the European League in spite of some injuries to experienced players.

Coach profile

Edwin Benne began coaching in 1997 after an illustrious career as a volleyball player. In 1999 he took over the Omniworld club, moving into his current role as coach of the men's national team in 2011. Under his leadership the team took home gold at the European League last year.

As a player, Benne was first selected for the national team in 1984.  His international career spanned nine years during which time he received 382 caps and represented his country in two Olympic Games. He was part of the team that achieved fifth place at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and on the team that won silver in Barcelona four years later.  Benne also contributed to The Netherlands’ second place win at the 1990 World League and the 1993 European League. He has also played for clubs in The Netherlands, Germany, Turkey, France, Japan and Italy.
