Team profile

The Dominican Republic has moved up the standings and emerged as a competitive volleyball nation in the Americas in just a few years.

They entered this year’s FIVB World League playoffs after earning a bronze-medal in front of a home crowd at the 12th Pan American Cup. Under the guidance of new coach Osiel Vazquez of Cuba, the Dominican Republic team qualified with a five-set victory over a young and promising Brazilian squad in a match lasting 2 hours and 14 minutes.

It was an important victory for a team that missed the FIVB 2010 World Championship when they relinquished a two-set lead and lost to Mexico for the last remaining NORCECA spot in the competition.

Although the Dominican Republic are currently 45th in the FIVB world rankings, they bring a wealth of experience, skill and potential to hold their own against higher-placed teams.

Coach profile

Osiel Vazquez, originally from Cuba, was coach of the Dominican Republic boys’ junior team from 2009 to 2012. He officially took over as coach of the men’s national team last June and led his side to a bronze medal win at the men’s Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo a month later.

Vazquez has been coaching volleyball for 20 years and has a bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Cuba's Institute of Sports and Physical Education.
