The Dominican Republic has moved up the standings and emerged as a competitive volleyball nation in the Americas in just a few years. They entered this year’s FIVB World League playoffs after earning a bronze-medal in front of a home crowd at the 12th Pan American Cup. Under the guidance of new coach Osiel Vazquez of Cuba, the Dominican Republic team qualified with a five-set victory over a young and promising Brazilian squad in a match lasting 2 hours and 14 minutes.
It was an important victory for a team that missed the FIVB 2010 World Championship when they relinquished a two-set lead and lost to Mexico for the last remaining NORCECA spot in the competition.
Although the Dominican Republic are currently 45th in the FIVB world rankings, they bring a wealth of experience, skill and potential to hold their own against higher-placed teams.
