The Korean men’s national team has had an injection
of young players for 2013 with their sights firmly set on
the 2014 Asian Games and 2016 Olympic Games. With
coach Park Ki-Won still at the helm, the team hopes to
further their 14
place finish at the 2012World League,
which allowed them to qualify for the 2013 season.
In the World League, Korea has finished 13
in 2009, 16
in 2010, 13
in 2011 and 14
The national team also finished third at the Asia
Men’s Volleyball Championships in 2007 and 2009 and
at the 2007 World Cup.
Park Ki-Won was appointed coach
in 2011. He played for Korea
from 1972-1978, helping them
to a fourth-place finish at the
World Championship and
gold at the 1978 Asian Games.
After his retirement, Park spent nearly 20 years as a
coach in Italy. He led Perugia Sirio to the Women’s
Championship in 1987 and Forli Volley to the men’s
second league title in 1990. In 2002, he coached the
Iran men’s team to silver at the Asian Games. In 2003,
the team beat Japan for the first time in its history and
finished third at the Asian Championship in China. In
he returned to Korea and became coach of LIG
Insurance men’s volleyball team.
