The most successful Finnish
volleyball player begins his first
season as coach of Team Finland
this year. Tuomas Sammelvuo
played 296 national team games
and was playing for Russia’s
Lokomotiv Novosibirsk when appointed coach in
January 2013, replacing Daniel Castellani. As a player,
Sammelvuo helped the men’s national team attain
fourth place at the 2007 European Championships. He
was named ‘Player of the Year’ four times in Finland
as well as ‘Sport Idol of the Year’ in 2013. During his
career, Sammelvuo has played professionally in Finland,
France, Italy, Japan, Russia and Poland. He speaks
Finnish, English, Italian, French, Polish and Russian.
