Cuba made their debut in the FIVB Volleyball World
League in 1991, winning the title once in 1998. With a
relatively young team, Cuba has finished fourth in the
FIVB World League on two occasions. They have also
been runners-up at the FIVB World Championship (in
and won the 2011 NORCECA Championship,
which earned them a place at last year’s FIVB World
Cup where they finished fifth.
They also secured second place at the Pan American
Games in 2011 and the Cup of Champions in 2009.
With such great natural talent and a highly valued
technical staff, there is no doubt that the glory the team
experienced in the 1990s is once again within reach.
Youth is on their side and with such an astute coach as
Orlando Samuels at the helm, the future of the team
One of the most successful
coaches in the world, Orlando
Samuels Blackwood, will once
again guide Cuba at this year’s
FIVB World League. He has already
experienced 10 editions of the
competition and is well-known by his squad, having
brought many of them through the youth and junior
teams. Samuels’ 20 year career has been defined by
experience, strategic knowledge, top-level analyses
and complete dedication to his work. Not one to
remonstrate during a match, his wise words and subtle
wisdom are the mark of a true professor at the peak of
his power. He instils in his players a sense of national
pride as well as a love for the sport of volleyball.
