Brazilians come up short
As always, great things were expected of world
No. 1 Brazil, but those expectations were lowered
when the South Americans had to start the
tournament without talismanic captain Giba and
fellow wing-spiker Murilo. Coach Bernardinho
also realised that lack of match practice could
hurt his team. “We had the whole group only
for a couple of weeks and we did not have
opportunities to play friendly matches, as Poland
did,” Bernardinho noted. “Canada and Finland
played for Olympic qualification and faced strong
teams like Cuba and Italy.” Faced with the might
of Poland in Pool B, as well as two teams in Canada
and Finland with the potential to upset the big
teams, Brazil performed creditably, finishing three
points behind Poland in the standings. With Giba
and Murilo back on the team, Bernardinho could
at least have higher expectations for the Finals.
Not for long. They were whipped 3-0 by Cuba
and lost to the eventual champions Poland in five
sets. Brazil’s sixth-place finish is their worst ever,
having never before dropped lower than fifth.
