Getting closer to glory
Germany were one of many teams juggling
London Olympic qualifications and the FIVB
World League, but new coach Vital Heynen said
the key was to keep improving. “In general, my
goal is to get better every day and to play better.
Of course, the aim is also to win.” In the end,
Germany did pretty well, qualifying from the
Intercontinental Round with the joint top record
(10:2)
and the highest points total (30). In their
opening Finals match, Germany faced Bulgaria –
against whom they had lost two contests in Pool
D, although Germany came back with two wins in
the Intercontinental Round to even the score. On
home ground in Sofia, Bulgaria were too strong.
But Germany could still reach the semifinals if
they beat USA by a convincing score and Bulgaria
did the same. They did overcome the Americans,
but it took them five sets to do it and they were
finished off when USA defeated Bulgaria to finish
with four points. All three teams finished 1:1,
but Germany had only two points. Nevertheless,
Germany can be proud of making their first foray
into the World League Finals – their previous best
had been eighth in 1993.
