Bulgaria’s talent shines
A change of coach wasn’t the best way for
Bulgaria to start the tournament, especially
as they were hosts of the Finals. But former
star Nayden Naydenov came in and settled the
team down as they fought against Germany,
Argentina and Portugal in Pool D. Two early wins
over Germany didn’t do them any harm, but
after two weeks the top three teams – Bulgaria,
Germany and Argentina – all had 4:2 win:loss
records. Tsvetan Sokolov was on fire in Round
3,
and although Bulgaria couldn’t stop Germany
pulling away at the top of the table, they finished
second in the standings and Sokolov was the top
scorer in the Intercontinental Round. But the real
challenge was still ahead of them. A win over
Germany was enough to earn them a place in the
semifinals in Sofia, but they were no match for
Poland. They fought hard against Cuba but lost
3-2
and finished in fourth place for the third time
in 10 years. In the Finals, Bulgarian players were
either best or second-best in every individual
category except one (Best Spiker). Georgi Bratoev
was Best Setter, while Todor Aleksiev was Best
Scorer and Best Receiver.
