Young guns start to shine
With five teenagers and an 18-year-old captain
in Wilfredo León, some opponents might have
been forgiven for underestimating the team from
the Caribbean. But winning the bronze medal in
Sofia should leave no doubt that these are serious
contenders. León himself had a magnificent
tournament as the second-highest scorer in
the Intercontinental Round and sixth-highest
in the Finals, one point ahead of team-mate
Henry Bell. Cuba finished the Intercontinental
Round with a 10:2 win:loss record, losing only to
Serbia and Russia in a remarkable performance
considering they had to play their “home” leg
in the Dominican Republic whilst their stadium
in Havana continued to be refurbished. They
kicked off the Finals with a convincing 3-0 win
over Brazil before losing to Poland. They were
no match for USA in the semifinals, but fought
superbly to defeat hosts Bulgaria 3-2 in the
bronze-medal match and pick up their first medal
since 2005. Cuba are the fourth most decorated
team in World League history, with nine medals
from their 21 appearances in the competition.
But most of that success came during the 1990s,
and the country will hope this new generation of
players can bring back some of the old form.
