In Pool C, USA got off to the worst possible start,
crashing 3-1 to France, scraping past Korea 3-2
and losing 3-0 to Italy. But coach Alan Knipe
didn’t push the panic button, saying it was
normal to be in a still approximate shape.”
Once they reached the next round in France, the
Americans weren’t ‘approximate’ any more. They
swept all three teams in Lyon and then repeated
the trick in Gwangju, Korea. But after beating
Korea 3-0 on the first day, the Americans came
up against a determined French team, who won
3-2.
That put pressure on USA in their final match
against Italy. The Italians took a 2-1 lead, but
the Americans fought back to take the last two
sets and earn the ticket to Sofia. In the Finals,
USA were stunned 3-2 by Germany in their first
game, before overcoming Bulgaria 3-0. They won
by a similar score against Cuba in the semifinals,
but couldn’t match Poland in the final. The silver
medal is USA’s first, giving them a complete
medal set along with their gold from 2008 and
their bronzes from 1992 and 2007. Clayton
Stanley took the Best Server award.
