China may have won both matches in their First
Round against Egypt, but they had to work hard
for it. In the first match, Egypt’s Ahmed Abdelhay
put up an impressive 25 points but the rest of his
team found it harder to get through the Chinese
block. Liang Chunlong had six blocking points for
China, while Egypt didn’t help themselves with
22
errors as they fell 29-27, 25-22, 25-22. In the
second leg, Abdelhay notched up 27 points over
five sets in a losing effort. China had a slight edge
in terms of defence, serving and errors, and a big
game from Zhong Weijun (22 points).
China again had home advantage in the Second
Round, but they dropped their first match to
Portugal 3-1 after taking the first set. Valdir
Sequeira bombed the Chinese defence with 28
points and he was the difference between the
two teams in a close match. China took the
second match but could only win in five sets,
earning only two points to Portugal’s four and
missing out on the 2012 World League.
