QUALIFIERS
A qualification process was put in place to
determine the last two teams in the 2012
FIVB World League Intercontinental Round.
Fourteen teams qualified directly into the
Intercontinental Round, leaving six other teams
to fight for the last two places. The six teams
were Portugal, Puerto Rico, Egypt, China,
Canada and Slovakia. As the lowest-ranked
teams from the 2011 World League who
hadn’t already qualified, Portugal (14
th
)
and
Puerto Rico (16
th
)
were seeded to enter the
qualification process from the second round.
Under normal circumstances, Japan, who
finished 15
th
in 2011, would have been part
of the qualification process, but the FIVB took
into account the difficulties faced by Japan
following the March 11, 2011, earthquake
that devastated large parts of the country
and gave them a direct entry into the 2012
Intercontinental Round.
That meant that Canada would take on
Slovakia to start Playoff 1, while China would
face Egypt to begin Playoff 2 – both series
taking place over two legs. China had qualified
by beating Iran 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 25-
19)
in an Asian qualifying match in China in
July 2011. The other three first-round qualifiers
represented Africa, Europe and the Americas.
