Portugal salvage a point
Portugal managed to finish 14
th
in the 2011 FIVB
World League, but were under no illusions about
the challenge facing them in 2012. “Although
my team has the same jersey, it is a new team,”
Portugal coach Flavio Gulinelli pointed out. “We
are here to learn from the other teams.” From the
first game in Pool D against Germany, Gulinelli’s
situation didn’t get any better. They lost the
match 3-0; even worse, they lost their captain
to injury. “I am very sad and disappointed,”
Gulinelli stated. “We had a good first set but
the problems in reception and blocking were too
huge. Most of the time, it was not volleyball but
only a fight for us. In general, this tournament
is the opportunity for our young team to gain
experience.” That they did as they were given
several more lessons by Germany, Argentina
and Bulgaria. They went into their final match
with a 0:11 win:loss record and no points, and
their desire to compete finally earned them some
redemption in the form of a single point from a
3-2
loss to Argentina. Portugal have made eight
appearances in the World League, reaching fifth
place in 2005.
