Fighting Koreans win one
Korea and Japan, Asia’s two representatives in
the 2012 FIVB World League, managed just one
win between them in 24 matches. Korea’s result
wasn’t their worst ever – that would be 16
th
in
2010 –
but it was a long way off the best of their
13
finishes, sixth in 1995. In fairness, they were
drawn against three very strong teams – USA, Italy
and France – in Pool C. Korea warmed up for the
competition with two practice matches against
France – and lost them both 3-1. France continued
their winning ways as the competition got under
way and USA followed suit, winning all four of
their contests with Korea. Italy, however, was a
different story. Italy are unlikely to be searching
out the Koreans for more games after all their
contests went to five sets. After the first match in
Florence, Italy coach Mauro Berruto was lost for
words: “After 150 minutes and 119 points each
there is nothing more to say.” The match took
two hours and 22 minutes, with Italy taking the
final set 18-16. When Pool C moved to France,
the Koreans notched their one and only victory. In
all, Korea lost five matches in five sets and were
able to pick up a hard-earned seven points.
