Signs of hope for Finland
Ranked No. 27 in the world, Finland knew they
would have to fight to get results in Pool B. In
their seventh World League appearance they
were up against world No. 1 Brazil, No. 4 Poland
and Canada, who at 18
th
in the rankings were
still nine places above the Finns. But Finland had
finished 10
th
in the 2011 edition of the World
League and Argentine coach Daniel Castellani
could at least expect his players to put up a
fight. Castellani didn’t make it to Round 1, but
his temporary replacement, Pekka Lahtinen,
promised, “We are going to play hard.” They
certainly did that in the first set of their opening
match against hosts Canada. They lost that set
33-31
and the match 3-0, but they had made
an impression. The next day, they made an even
bigger one, stunning Poland in five sets with Olli-
Pekka Ojansivu scoring 29 points, including five
on his service. But it didn’t last; Finland picked up
just two more wins and finished bottom of Pool
B with seven points. The only bright spot was
Mikko Oivanen’s 33 points against Canada on
June 3. Oivanen was the seventh-highest scorer
in the Intercontinental Round.
