Canada gain experience
Canada qualified for the 2012 FIVB World League
for the fifth time after wins over Slovakia and
Puerto Rico, but they would have to outplay
Poland, Brazil and Finland in Pool B if they wanted
to make it to the Finals. Coach Glenn Hoag was
up for the challenge: “The World League is a
great opportunity for us. I really like the pool we
are in. This is exactly what we need right now; we
need to play these strong teams.’’ After winning
their first two matches in Toronto they must
have thought they were in with a chance. Not
only did they beat Finland 3-0 in a tough match,
they followed up with a sensational 3-2 victory
over Brazil in which Gavin Schmitt racked up 33
points. “Brazil is a team that I study all the time
and to beat them is really an honour,” Hoag said.
The World League is a big opportunity for us
to play big matches and this experience will pay
off.” Unfortunately, it didn’t pay off in the rest
of their campaign. Despite big numbers from
Schmitt, who was the fourth-highest scorer in
the Intercontinental Round, Canada only won
one more game and finished third in Pool B with
a 3-9 record.
