Fast start a false dawn
For a team ranked No. 3 in the world and who
were eight-time champions, an 11
th
-
place finish
in this year’s edition was surely a surprise. It was
also the country’s poorest World League result,
worse than their 9
th
place nadir in 2007. In their
defence, the Italians were tired after playing
in Olympic qualifiers and they were in a tough
pool with USA, France and Korea. Coach Mauro
Berruto brought back veterans Luigi Mastrangelo
and Samuele Papi, both of whom turned out
for the Azzurri when they won silver in front of
their home fans in Rome in 2004, the last time
the side made the podium in the competition.
Mastrangelo featured at last year’s World Cup
while the 39-year-old Papi returned to the team
for the first time since the 2006 edition. Italy
actually got off to a flying start in the competition,
blitzing the opposition during the first week in
Florence, including a 3-0 victory over USA. They
beat France 3-1 and picked up the first of three
3-2
victories over Korea, a two-and-a-half-hour
match in which both teams scored 119 points.
In France the next week, however, Italy lost three
straight and never got back on track.
