Brazil followed their game plan against Puerto Rico

Bernardinho Rezende of Brazil (L) and Carlos Cardona of Puerto Rico at the press conference on Friday night after the match

Puerto Rico captain Hector Soto: “It was not what we expected, but despite the result we had some positives. They had two warm-up matches before coming here and this is our first match since the World Championships. They made very few errors and we tried to force the game because we have to rely on our services. Their floating serves gave us a lot of problems but I am confident that tomorrow will be another day.”

Brazil captain Gilberto Godoy (Giba): “We made very few errors and our blocking and defense was good. It is always tough when you play against a team with a fast offense like Puerto Rico. Tomorrow’s match will be tougher and we must be prepared for that.”

Puerto Rico coach Carlos Cardona: “It was the classic game for a debuting team. We had a lot of pressure created by our desire to make the things better. We made many errors trying to play good against a big rival. That’s not an alibi. The difference was gigantic as they almost played perfect volleyball averaging two errors per set. I have to see the glass half full than half empty. Tomorrow, we have to play with more calm and correct our mistakes.”

Brazil coach Bernardo Rezende: “I think the experience worked in our favor. We followed our strategy of not running too many risks and it translated into few errors and that was our objective. Puerto Rico can play better but we also can play better than tonight. I am very happy because we made only a bunch of errors in our very first match of the season. Our goal is to make the Poland round as everyone expects Brazil to be there. It is always a lot of pressure because of that.”
