An important victory for Portugal

Press Conference after the match Portugal vs Finland (left to right) Finland captain Tuomas Sammelvuo, Finland coach Daniel Castellani, moderator, Portugal coach Juan Diaz, Portugal captain Joao Jose

Povoa de Varzim, Portugal, May 28, 2011 - Portugal v Finland press conference.

Portugal coach Juan Diaz: We had a good attitude and we always played to win, even though we had made many errors in the first set and wasted some advantage situations. Finland played well and caught us up in the final points. Afterwards, with the playing of the match, the tranquility returned and all started to be more balanced. We ended up by winning and that’s very important for the team, in the great experience that’s playing the World League. Congratulations to the public that was always there cheering for us. We hope we can count on their enthusiasm tomorrow to win the match.

Portugal captain Joao Jose: The essential was the behavior of the team that was always tranquil in the crucial moments. We took some risks in the serve and in the side-out and we were rewarded. But even if we had lost by 2-3, we should be congratulated by the posture that we demonstrated.

Finland coach Daniel Castellani: It was a very close match, but good for the public, with good defenses and excellent attacks. Congratulations to Portugal. They played well and so did we, in this first competition that we played together. Tomorrow we hope to play even better.

Finland captain Tuomas Sammelvuo: Congratulations to Portugal. They played very well and were good defending. We were good in the block but I think we lost the match in the side-out. We felt problems in the reception and also in the attack and that killed the match.
