Finland end World League with win over Portugal

Setter Mikko Esko starting the Finnish attack on Friday
Tampere, Finland, July 1, 2011 – Finland gave Portugal no chance in their final match of the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League as they took a clear 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) win in front of their home fans on Tampere.

Finland played with good spirit while Portugal had their moments, but could not stop the home side from sealing the win. The visitors are now in for a nervous wait for the result in France’s game with Korea. If France lose then they will be safe from a playoff spot.

The best scorer in this year's World League, Finnish opposite spiker Mikko Oivanen worked well again with 16 points and Antti Siltala was also on fine form with 14 points.

Portugal started the first set well and took a couple of points lead with good serves and attacks. Portugal was leading 8-6 at the first technical timeout before Finland came back with powerful attacks to take the lead and eventually stole the frame.

Finland played with enthusiasm in the second as excellent serves from Antti Siltala put pressure on Portugal's reception. Portugal drew closer but it was not enough as Finland moved to within one set of victory.

Finland continued to dominate in the beginning of the third set but the Portuguese were determined not to give up. They tied the set at 9-9 but Finland moved ahead again. Portugal again fought back and came within a point but Finland held on to seal the win and close their 2011 campaign.
