Bulgaria seal tight win over Japan

Japan took hosts Bulgaria to five sets in their match on Sunday
Varna, Bulgaria, June 26, 2011 - Bulgaria saw off Japan 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 21-25, 15-10) in their final match of the weekend in the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League but will bemoan the loss of one point which may see them narrowly miss out on a place in the Final Round for the second year in a row.

With a stuttering performance and reception off the pace, Bulgaria had many highs and lows in this match. Starting well through Tsvetan Sokolov the hosts took the first set fast and easy.

Japan setter Yuta Abe then roused his teammates in the second set to take advantage of some poor Bulgarian defense and draw level.

Sokolov spiked well in the third set, leading his team and the crowd to the edge of volleyball ecstasy as the hosts sealed the third set.

But Japan again fought back in the fourth to deny Bulgaria full points and take the match to a fifth set.

However the hosts rallied back to eventually pick up the narrow win, albeit a bitter-sweet one.

Bulgaria will now face Russia as Japan travel to Germany.
