Portugal downed in Novi Sad by determined Serbia

Marko Podrascanin helps his side pick up a straight sets win over Portugal on Saturday
Novi Sad, Serbia, June 11, 2011 – Serbia bounced back from their loss against Portugal as they picked  up a 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 29-27) win over the visitors in Pool C of the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League on Saturday night in Novi Sad.
The first set started with strong serves from both teams as they traded points throughout. Portugal took the lead towards the end of the set but despite two set points it was the hosts who took the early lead as they fought back.
Srbia took the lead in the first set as they claimed five quick points to go ahead. Despite a number of changes to their line up Portugal continued to suffer from an efficient Serb attack lead by Dragan Stankovic and Sasa Starovic. Eventually a poor serve from Portugal captain Jose Joao grated the home side a 2-0 lead.
Portugal gained five point lead in the third as they stormed ahead of the hosts before Serbia coach Igor Kolakovic took a time out to regain control. But Portugal continued to stay in control. But the tension proved too much for the side as they relinquished their lead thanks to a relentless Serbian attack as the home side gained revenge for Friday night’s loss.

Next week Serbia travel to Finland as Portugal face Argentina.
