Argentina edge Finland in thriller

Argentina celebrate as they seal a tight win over Finland on Friday
Lahti, Finland, June 10, 2011 – Argentina needed five sets to seal a 3-2 (25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-10) win over hosts Finland in the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League match in Lahti on Friday.

With the win Argentina maintains top spot in Pool C after winning four of their five matches.

Both teams played a similar game in what was a seesaw affair. But it was Argentina’s Facundo Conte, who scored 24 points, Luciano De Cecco and libero Franco Lopez who were the difference between the two sides in the end.

Mikko Oivanen helped buoy the Finns with 15 points but their reception suffered at the hands of numerous vicious attacks and they often had trouble surpassing the South American defense.

The match was played in front of an enthusiastic crowd with children from the Power Cup tournament filling the hall and enjoying a great game.

Argentina had a better start in the match leading the first set 6-2 and then 8-5 at the first technical timeout. They maintained their lead to 16-13 with strong serves and excellent defense before taking the lead.

Finland had a tremendous start in the second taking a 4-0 lead thanks to the serves of Matti Oivanen. The Finns kept the fight going to further their lead before bringing the scores level at 1-1.

The third set started evenly before Argentina took control, leading 16-13 at the second technical timeout. The Finns made too many mistakes, especially with their serves as they gifted the visitors the set.

Argentina's strong performance continued in the fourth set and Finland had difficulty as they drifted further behind. However the home side put on a phenomenal come back to draw level before moving ahead to take the match to a tie breaker to the delight of the fans.

But the fight back was short lived for Finland as Argentina regrouped to take the fifth set and with it the win.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 16:00 GMT.
