Russia see off Bulgaria in convincing style

Russia celebrate as they clinch their fifth straight win in this year's FIVB Volleyball World League
Surgut, Russia, June 10, 2011 – Bulgaria went down in straight sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-18) to Russia in Friday’s opening 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League fixture in Surgut as the hosts illustrated their power against their stuttering visitors.

With the victory Russia improve their win-loss record to 5-0 while Bulgaria drop to 3-2.

Russia started vigorously in the first set and soon had a confident lead of four points. By the second technical time out Russia had increased the gap to eight points and despite a Bulgarian reshuffle they could not stop the home side taking the early lead.

Russia stayed just ahead of Bulgaria early on in the second thanks to some good defending. Bulgaria took the lead for the first time in the match at 16-15 but Russia scored five points in a row before captain Taras Khtei finished the set for his team with a well-placed smash.

The third set saw Bulgaria put up more of a fight to take a narrow three point advantage. But Maxim Mikhaylov’s attack brought the scores level at 9-9 before Bulgaria took a time out. Russia accelerated their play, putting the Bulgarians under pressure as last year’s runners up stormed to victory.

Both teams will meet again on Saturday at 12:00 GMT.
