Argentina complete clean sweep over Portugal

Argentina's win confirms their place on top of Pool C and keeps alive their dream of a Final Round spot
Povoa de Varzim, Portugal, June 4, 2011 – Argentina sealed a 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 14-25 and 25-22) win over Portugal in Pool C of the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League to confirm their control of the group on Saturday.

Facundo Conte led his side in victory, illustrating that the young Argentinean is a force for the future.

The match had an even start but the likes of Luciano de Cecco and Conte helped the visitors build up a solid lead to take the first set, despite a leate fight back from the hosts.

Argentina solidified their lead in the second thanks again to Conte, this time combining well with Rodrigo Quiroga. But it was far from easy as they allowed the home side to creep in mid way through at 20-18. But a powerful spike from the ever-present Conte helped the team enhance their lead.

Portugal’s Manuel Silva helped Portugal to regroup and go on the offensive in the third as they surged ahead driven largely by the home crowd as they bit into Argentina’s lead.

However it was too little too late for Portugal as they were finally put to the sword by the visitors as the young stallions from South America put on a spectacular show to seal the win.

Both teams play away next week with Argentina facing Finland and Portugal playing bronze medalists from last year Serbia.
