Russia claim third straight victory at home

Despite being pushed close Russia remained unbeaten in the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League with a win over Germany
Kaliningrad, Russia, June 3, 2011 – Russia picked up their third win in the 2011 FIVB World League with a straight sets (29-27, 25-23, 25-23) victory over Germany on Friday night at home in Kaliningrad.

Maxim Mikhaylov led all scorers with 17 points on 13 kills and two blocks. Taras Khtei added 13 points for his side. Jochen Schops led Germany with 14 points.

The victory took  Russia to a win-loss record of 3-0 as Germany were dealt their second defeat in three matches in this year’s tournament.

The German team started strongly with powerful attacks from captain Robert Kromm, who helped his team to an early lead before the Russians tied the score at13-13. The visitors continued to pile on the pressure but the home side managed to finish the set 29-27.

The teams traded points throughout the second set, however the Russia were spurred on by their supporters towards the end to claime the set 25-23.

Despite the powerful Russian attack the visitors put up a good fight with a number of good spikes in the third to tie the score at 9-9. Following a number of exciting moments the hosts regained the lead and eventually took the set 25-23 and with that the match.

The two sides will clash again on Saturday at 15:00 GMT.
