Portugal clinch second victory over Finland

Portugal's Hugo Gaspar fires a huge spike over Finland's block as his side clinch a win over the Nordic side on Sunday.

Povoa de Varzim, Portugal, May 29, 2011 - Portugal sealed a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23) win over Finland on Sunday as they finished off their opening 2011 Volleyball World League weekend in perfect style in front of their home fans.

As in the first match, Sunday's encounter was an  emotive clash with Finland surprising Portugal in the second set and the locals replying in the third by recovering from a disadvantage and being driven on by the crowd.

The first set saw both sides come out strong in both serve and attack. Nevertheless, Portugal were able to gain advantage in key moments to help them take an early lead.

The following set saw Portugal again go ahead but Finland reeled them in, despite Antti Siltala's best efforts. In the end, it was Portugal's attack that caused a strong Finnish comeback as the visitors drew even at 1-1.

The third set was an equal affair as both teams looked to gain a footing in the match. Finland had early control before Portugal came back with a block from Joao Jose. Manuel Silva’s controlled play then helped guide the hosts to a 2-1 lead.

Motivated by the excellent performance in the previous set, Portugal didn’t let up in the fourth and initially had a good advantage. Pushed on by the home fans, the side maintained control to eventually pick up their second win in the 2011 World League.

Portugal now face Argentina at home while Finland have a tough away fixture against Serbia.
