Russia seal opening win over Japan

Russia celebrate as they begin their 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League campaign in perfect fashion with a straight sets win over Japan on Friday
Ufa, Russia, May 27, 2011 – Alexander Volkov and Alexey Spiridonov helped Russia overcome Japan as they clinched a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-28) victory in front of 4,700 spectators in their first Pool B match of the 2011 FIVB World League match on Friday at home in Ufa.

Russia was led by spiker newcomer Alexey Spiridonov who scored 16 points for the side. Kunihiro Shimizu earned 12 points for the Japanese team.

Russia was the dominant side in blocking and used their powerful attacks as they took advantage of a suffering Japanese team. The visitors suffered from many mistakes in their defense and reception before Taras Khtei saw out the first set 25-22.

The second set was a much tighter affair as both sides struggled to gain control before the first technical time-out. However, Russia managed to take a lead and finish off the set thanks to the talismanic Spiridonov with a 25-20 win.

Russia stormed ahead in the third, taking a lead which seemed all the more difficult to catch for Japan. The hosts eventually picked up the victory at 25-18.

The two sides are set to clash again on Saturday at 12:00 GMT and Japan will be hoping to recover.
