Berlin, Germany, June 23, 2011 – A ninth match and ninth victory – Russia remains the only unbeaten team in this year’s World League and overcame Germany in the third clash between the two teams. But Thursday's victory was a tough fight for Vladimir Alekno's team and the visitors conceded their first point in the competition. Germany still has one chance to beat the favourites in front of the whole World: On June 24 (19:30 local time) the “Match of the Week” will be Germany-Russia.
To win, the hosts will have to play as they did in the second, third and fourth sets on Thursday and improve their consistency, which German coach Raúl Lozano regarded as one of the weaknesses of his team in the first match of the fifth weekend in the 2011 FIVB World League.
“For the audience it is important that we put on a good performance so that they are keen to support us,” he stated.
Germany's goal on Friday is to establish that connection between the team and their fans.
On the other hand, Alekno's team confirmed they are just as good on the road after playing four weekends at home. With the World League Final Round taking place in Gdansk-Sopotin, Poland, it could be an important factor if Russia wants to win their first international title since 2002.
