Team profile

A new-look, but still young, Cuban team will be seen in this year’s World League where all their “home” matches will be away. Despite this, the side is hoping to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish. Participation in the 2010 World Championship showed how this side is growing, and with one more year of competitive experience, they believe a gold medal is not out of reach. Wilfredo León Venero has come into his own in recent seasons, but there’s talent all through the team, including setter Yoandry Díaz Carmenate, opposite attackers Fernando Hernández Ramos and Rolando Cepeda Abreu, main attacker Osmany Camejo Durruthy and libero Keiber Gutierrez Torna. The technical team has also grown in experience. The World League will be the first step on the road to the 2012 London Olympics, where Cuba hopes to better the bronze won at the 1976 Games, Cuba’s only Olympic men’s volleyball medal. The legacy the current players have inherited from those who had the honor of collecting an Olympic medal drives them on to fulfill their goals – and the World League is one of them. Supporting them will be the heartbeat of millions of Cubans.
Coach profile

Former national team player Orlando Samuels Blackwood has a wealth of coaching experience at the international level having been the technical director of Cuba from 1985 to 1995. He was nominated as best coach in 1989 when his team won the gold medal at the Pan American Games, the Central American and Caribbean Games, and NORCECA Tournament, among others. In his most recent period in charge, Samuels, who is an FIVB coaching instructor, has been coach of the Cuban team since the 2007 FIVB World League.
