Maxim Mikhaylov started playing volleyball in Leningrad under the guidance of Valery Besprozvannykh. Starting in 2003 Maxim performed as an outside striker in different Yaroslavl clubs and last summer he moved to “Zenit” (Kazan).
Mikhaylov debuted for Russia on June 14, 2008, in the World League match against Korea. With Russia he has won bronze and silver in the World League and bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Mikhaylov was also nominated for the different individual awards, he was recognized as the best scorer and the best spiker in the 2010 FIVB World League, best spiker in the 2010 FIVB World Championship, best scorer in the 2011 CEV Champions League and best scorer in the Russian Superleague (2007/08, 2008/09, 2009/10).
