Sergey Makarov was born in Moscow and started playing volleyball at the age of 11. His first coach Mikhail Konstantinovsky from the very begining appointed him as a setter, and Sergey has had no regrets since. His professional career in MGFSO (Moscow) and then "Dynamo" (Moscow) was developing happily until a terrible car crash in 2002 which saw Sergey break both his legs. He missed the 2002/2003 season, and was thinking of finishing career. But due to the courageous character Makarov managed to recover and regain his place in the starting line-up of "Dynamo."
A new chapter in Makarov's life began in 2005, when he won the Russian Championship with "Dynamo" and joined the national team. After the defeat in European Championship final against Italy (3-2), coach team Zoran Gajic resigned, and new leader Vladimir Alekno decided not to use Makarov. Sergey only returned this year and taking into consideration the huge experience of Makarov and his iron-hard temper, Daniele Bagnoli decided to name him captain of Russia.
