   Profile
Taras Khtey was born in Lvov and tried his hands at different sports as a child, but eventually followed the example of his father, who was a professional volleyball player. Taras started playing in one of the Ukranian sportschools. At the age of 14 he came to Moscow to take part in the junior tournament and met famous coach Olga Verbova, who suggested Taras move to Russia and continue improving his skills in Moscow.

At the age of 16 Taras Khtey received Russian citizenship and stepped out for his first professional club, “MGTU” (Moscow). In 2001 when the team won the Russian Championship, the 19-year old Khtey was established as a starting player. From 1999 to 2001 he also performed successfully in international competitions for junior, youth and student teams of Russia under the leadership of Sergei Shlyapnikov and Yuri Nechushkin.

In June 2002 Taras debuted in the Russian national team in the World League match against Cuba. In that splendid season Khtey won the World League and became a World Championship silver medalist in Argentina.

In autumn 2003 Taras Khtey made his debut for "Dynamo" (Moscow).  In January 2004 he played an integral part of the national team at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Leipzig and guaranteed himself participation at the 2004 Athens Olympics. The team, under the guidance of Gennady Shipulin, won bronze at the Games.

In 2005 Taras Khtey, with a Russian team headed by Zoran Gajic, won the gold medal in the Euroleague and became silver medalists of the CEV European Championship. The 2005/06 season Taras spent time at Neftyannik" (Ufa) and then moved to “Iskra” (Odintsovo). In July 2006 he played only one game for the national team and then stepped back for four years. The club season 2007/08 in “Iskra” was not good for Taras and resulted in another change of club.

Taras Khtey signed a one-year contract with “Lokomotiv” (Belgorod). Here he was able to get the required match time, with many games coming at opposite, a position he was not familiar with. In spring 2009 he won the CEV Cup with Belgorod.

In 2009/10 season after the departure from Belgorod of Sergei Tetyukhin Taras Khtey became the captain of “Lokomotiv”. He coped magnificently with leadership role and went to the level of play that allowed him to return to the Russian national team. For the first time in his career Taras Khtey won the Prize of Andrei Kuznetsov, given annually to the best player of the Russian Championship.
