Profile
Flavio Cruz was born in Funchal, Madeira Island, in 1982 and soon started to play volleyball.
His first club, when he was eight-years old, was ACD Fuuchal, playing afterwards for VC Funchal and CS Maritimo. In 2002 he played for Vitoria SC for one year before returning to CS Maritimo. His first experience playing for a foreign club was back in 2004 when he travelled to Italy to play for Allegrini Bergamo. He left the following year to play again in Portugal but returned in 2006 to play again, this time for Copra Berni Piacenza.
In 2007 he returned to Vitoria SC, winning the National Championships, and then transferred to SC ESpinho, winning another two national championships. Currently Flavio plays for SL Benfica.
He began playing for the national team in 2001. The 194-cm universal is, as usual in a Madeira island typical native, famous for his constant good mood, as well as his practical jokes. He is an explosive spiker, fast over the ball, and difficult to stop if well served. His serve, if consistent, can be very aggressive. In the past he has finished eighth at the 2002 World Championships, fifth in the 2005 World League and the tenth in the 2005 European Championships.
