Hugo Gaspar was born in Marinha Grande in 1983, and started to play volleyball when he was 14 years old.
His first club was SO Marinhense, where he played for two seasons, followed by a five year stint with Esmoriz GC. In 2004 he travelled to Italy where he played for Sisley Treviso in an excellent year which saw the team win the Italian Championship, the Italian Cup and Super Cup. Returning to Portugal the following year, he has since played for Vitoria SC, where he won the Portuguese Championship and Portuguese Cup, Castelo da Maia GC and is currently playing for SL Benfica.
The 200-cm wingspiker is already a veteran in high level competition, both in for his clubs and national team. Disciplined and studious, he was able to combine his medicine studies and high-level sport. In the national team the best results he has achieved include eighth place in the World Championship in 2002, fifth place in the 2005 World League and the 10th place in the 2005 European Championships.
