Opposite João Paulo had his first experience with the Brazilian national team in 2000 when, playing for the youth team, he won the South American Championship. In 2002, playing for the junior team, João Paulo won the South American Championship and won silver at the World Championships. In 2005, he took part in the team who won the World League. In 2009, he had new opportunities in the national team, winning the World League again as well as the World Grand Champions Cup and the South American Championship. He started the 2010 season winning the World League title and finished it with another gold medal, the World Championships.
