The history of the Korean Men's team in world competitions over the last 40 years has been rather inconsistent.
Korea has participated in the Olympic Games eight times since 1964 and their best ranking was a fifth place at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.
The Koreans have won gold three times at the Asian Games, in 1978 in Bangkok, 2002 in Busan and in 2006 in Doha.
In the World Cup, a fifth place in 1991 is the best result ever reached by the Korean Men’s team.
Meanwhile, Korea won four Asian Men's Volleyball Championship titles in 1989, 1993, 2001 and 2003.
In the 2006 World League, Korea team won four matches. Altough this result was not satisfactory, the competition with world-class teams was very good experience and it helped the team to win gold at the 2006 Asian Games.
In the last edition of the World League, the Korean Men won three and lost nine. Although result was not satisfactory, the team gained experience through matches against Brazil, Finland and Canada. Through these experiences, the Koreans are on the way to becoming a top-class team.
This year, young players like Sung-Min Moon, who acquired valuable experience by taking part in international competitions in 2006 and 2007, will become integral parts of the team, while veteran players returning from injury will give the team balance. |

It is definitely undoubtful that Mr. SHIN, Chi-Yong, who returned to Korea national men's volleyball team as head coach, is one of the top coaches in Korea.
He started his coaching career as an assistant coach at 1989 Jr. Men's World Championship in Greece. After that, he filled the role of Assistant Coach of KOR National Men's VB team during 1991 - 1994. After being nominated as Head Coach of KOR National men's team, he made good and excellent results in the numerous international matches such as 1999 World Cup, 2000 Sydney Olympic and 2002 Busan Asian game.
Mr. SHIN achieved champion titles in 9 consecutive years of Korea Super League, National Winter Volleyball League from 1997 to 2004 as well as champion titles for 2 times in Korea V-League, Professional Volleyball League in 2005 and 2008.
We expect Mr. SHIN will show his own discerning leadership and make KOR team best ever before taking with his longtime assistant coach Mr. SEO Nam-Won, who carried out good performance in the 1st and 2nd weekend in 2008 World League.
He was born in 1955 and has a wife, the former basketball player of Korea national team and one daughter, a professional basketball player. |
