Brazil and Japan set to rewrite team history in World Grand Prix title decider

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 23, 2014 – The final match between Brazil and Japan stands to test the determination of these teams to emerge as the best team in the exciting title decider of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix.

Brazil will go for its record 10th World Grand Prix title, while Japan aims to win its first-ever title victory in 22 participations.

Japan have kept their record spotless, earning the maximum points that placed them in the top spot. Brazil, on the other hand, had three straight victories after a 3-2 loss against Turkey on their first match in the Finals.

Russia, China and Turkey will vie for third, fourth and fifth places, while Belgium remain in sixth place on their debut year in the World Grand Prix.

Key Points

• China have yet to win a Final Round match in straight sets.

• China have lost six matches this season so far; they can equal their highest number of losses on a single World Grand Prix if they lose to Russia on Sunday.

• Russia can lose consecutive Final Round matches in straight sets for the first time since 2011.

• Tatiana Kosheleva leads all players in the Final Round in scoring – she tallied 81 points in four matches.

• Russia have won the last three meetings with China, the last two in straight sets.

• Russia have the upper hand winning eight of 11 meetings in the Final Round.

• This will be the first World Grand Prix match between Belgium and Turkey.

• Turkey have lost three of her last four matches against teams from Europe.

• Brazil will win their 10th title if they win 3-0 or 3-1 against Japan.

• Brazil win on Sunday would double the number of gold medals of the second-most successful team – USA with five wins.

• Japan only need two sets to win their first ever World Grand Prix crown.

• Japan win on Sunday can make them the seventh team to win the World Grand Prix after Brazil, USA, Russia, Cuba, China and Netherlands.

• Brazil and Japan have a 31-4 win-record – Japan’s four wins came in home soil in a five-setter in Fukuoka in 1994.

• Brazil have won the last three meetings in straight sets, including their most recent meeting in the 2013 Final Round.
