China look to snap losing spell against Brazil since 2008




Lausanne, Switzerland, August 20, 2014 – After winning their Finals opener against Belgium, China will be facing tougher nemesis Brazil, whom they have not beaten since June 2008 in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix. 

The Chinese squad will attempt to snap their 10-match losing streak against the nine-time winners in the second match. Prior to this tough clash, opening day losing teams Russia and Belgium will finally break into the win-column. 

Meanwhile, winning teams Japan and Turkey will play each other to gain a better standing in the Round Robin competition.

• Russia ended their three-match winning streak that propelled them to a Finals berth. 

• Russia need to win one more set to reach 500 won sets to join Brazil, China and USA as the teams who have won over 500 sets in the World Grand Prix. 

• Belgium also ended their three-match winning streak in the World Grand Prix. 

• Belgium’s top scorer Lise Van Hecke is nursing a knee injury. 

• Russia have won six of their last seven World Grand Prix meetings with European opponents. 

• Belgium have lost four of their 12 World Grand Prix matches this season - three of which were against European adversaries.
 

• Brazil suffered their first defeat in the World Grand Prix this season at the hands of Turkey. 

• Brazil have not lost back-to-back World Grand Prix matches since 2007. 

• China started the Finals last season with four consecutive victories, before losing against Brazil. 

• China won the World Grand Prix in 2003, they finished runners-up in 1993, 2001, 2002, 2007 and 2013, when they lost against Brazil 3-0 in their final match. 

• Brazil and China have met 33 times in the World Grand Prix; Brazil have won 23, while China have won 10. 

• China’s last victory against Brazil in a match outside of China was in July 2005 in Sendai, Japan.
 

• Japan are on their longest winning streak in the competition since their seven successive victories in the 2012-2013 season; they now have five consecutive wins. 

• Last year, Japan equalled their best-ever World Grand Prix finish of fourth place, which they achieved in 1994 and 1997. 

• Turkey snapped Brazil’s 18-match winning streak. 

• Turkey earned their first ever World Grand Prix win over the defending champions. 

• Turkey and Japan have met five times previously in the World Grand Prix; Japan have two victories, while Turkey have three. 

• Turkey won against Japan in Ankara this year; Japan’s last victory against Turkey was last year, also in Ankara.
