Final Four of World Grand Prix's Group 2 decided

Asuman Karakoyun of Turkey goes up for the ball against the Dominican Republic on Friday

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 8, 2014 – The Final Four for Group 2 of the FIVB World Grand Prix was determined on Friday as wins by Puerto Rico and Belgium earned them berths in Poland with two games remaining. Puerto Rico overcame Group 2 leaders the Netherlands 3-2 in the Dutch town of Doetinchem, while Belgium downed Poland 3-0 at the same venue.

Argentina’s 3-0 win over Peru dashed the Peruvians’ slim chances of making the Final Four in Poland, while Cuba picked up their first victory of the competition with a 3-0 win over Canada.

In Group 1, defending champions Brazil maintained their 100 per cent record with a 3-0 rout of Korea, while USA gained revenge for their first-day loss to Russia with a 3-1 victory.

In other Group 1 matches, the Dominican Republic edged Turkey 3-2 in Ankara, while Germany overcame Serbia 3-0, also in Ankara. Italy edged Japan 3-2 in Hong Kong, while China defeated Thailand 3-1.

Key points:

The Netherlands (17 points) top Group 2 ahead of Puerto Rico (16), Belgium (16) and Poland (14). Those four teams will contest the Final Four in Poland. Fifth-place Peru and Argentina have seven points each.

Cuba’s win over Canada ended a team record 20-game losing streak in the World Grand Prix.

14-year-old Melissa Vargas was Cuba’s top scorer with 14 points.

Brazil have 12 points after four matches in Group 1; only two points separate the next eight teams.

The Dominican Republic’s win over Turkey was their first in this year’s competition. Five Dominican players scored in double figures.

Japan remain the only winless team in Group 1 but have two points – the same as Thailand and the Dominican Republic – after two 3-2 losses.
