Brazil, Russia get big opening wins in World Grand Prix

 Lausanne, Switzerland, August 1, 2014 – Defending champions Brazil got off to a good start in the 2014 World Grand Prix, overcoming 2013 silver medallists China 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16), while last year’s bronze medallists Serbia rolled past Germany 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-15). USA, the champions in 2010, 2011 and 2012, were beaten 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20) by Russia.

In other Group 1 matches, Korea beat Thailand 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20), Italy swept past the Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-15) and Turkey defeated Japan 3-0 (29-27, 25-19, 25-21). 

In Group 2, the Netherlands and Poland stayed undefeated after four matches. The Dutch beat Argentina 3-0, while Poland overcame Cuba by the same score.

In Group 3, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria also stood at 4-0 following 3-0 wins over Algeria and Australia, respectively.

In other matches on Friday, Mexico beat Kazakhstan 3-0, Belgium defeated Canada 3-0, Croatia swept past Kenya 3-0 and Puerto Rico overcame Peru, also by a 3-0 margin.

Key points:
Russia made only nine errors against USA, who made 23.

Zhu Ting of China scored 24 points in the loss against Brazil.

Kim Yeon-Koung scored 29 points in the win over Thailand.

Japan sent down seven aces while Turkey made none.

Algeria scored a total of 32 points in the 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic. They failed to score a block point in the match.

Canada, Cuba, Algeria and Australia are all winless at 0-4.

The top three teams in Groups 1, 2 and 3 are from Europe.

The bottom five teams in Groups 2 and 3 are from outside Europe.

There will be 14 more matches on Saturday.
