Czech Republic chalk second win in Almaty

Czech Republic celebrate second victory

Almaty, Kazakhstan, July 26, 2014 – Czech Republic picked up their second win at the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix in Pool P of the Intercontinental Round as they beat Australia in straight sets (25-21, 25-14, 25-20) on Saturday at the Baluan Sports and Culture Palace.

Czech hitter Aneta Havlickova was the top scorer but three of her teammates posted double-digits as well. Veronika Trnkova, Tereza Vanzurova and Helena Havelkova all helped in running an effective offence. Blocking also proved to be the Czechs’ advantage as they scored 16 points off blocks.

Key Points

·     Czech Republic got their second win of the season and their first ever against Australia.

·     Czech Republic obtained their first ever win against a team representing the AVC at the World Grand Prix; they previously lost to China and Japan.

·     Aneta Havlickova top scored again for Czech Republic with 14 points.

·     The Czech team's 16 blocks is the top blocking performance by a team so far.

·     Veronika Trnkova led Czech Republic in blocking with nine deflections, outscoring the entire Australian team in that skill category.

Australia jumped off to a good start in the first set by posting good defence at the net and on the floor. This enabled hitters Rachel Rourke and Eliza Hynes to connect with their attacks.

However, the Czechs provided more variation in their offence. Setter Lucie Smutna had so many hitters on the floor with Havlickova, Tereza Vanzurova and Helena Havelkova firing away from various points. As Australia tried to inch closer, the Czechs played more steadily to win first set at 25-21.

The Czech team continued to pack power into their attacks and amassed a commanding momentum in the second set. While their reception was not entirely flawless, the Czechs successfully sustained their offensive rhythm until they won the second set 25-14.

Australia enjoyed the advantage in the third set, taking the lead at the first and second technical timeouts.  Once the Czechs resumed setting up Havlickova from the right flank, there was no way for the opponents to stop the scoring rampage. Australia still tried with a gallant effort to score but they soon erred on reception and attacks. Czech Republic won the third set with 25-20.
